My friend told me about this yesterday, and today it's on Kotaku because they've got a kickstarter. In short, it's a completely hackable videogame console. For more, probably best to get the info from them - Kickstarter link - has lots of info, and a video I'm waiting to buffer. Think it's a neat concept, but I don't really do any hacking of any sorts--and as someone else brought up, how security will be on it considering it's supposed to be so hackable. Something to keep an eye on

I read about this a few weeks ago and then also saw more about it the last few days on Facebook due to the Kickstarter starting up. I have two thoughts on this Ouya system. One, I think it sounds like a very cool and interesting idea. Two, I wouldn't put any money into it until I see how it is going to work and, especially, how the games will be. I don't want a console that is basically an Xbox LIVE, PlayStation Network or Virtual Console machine with predominantly downloadable-type games. If this system will put out something like Skyrim, Batman: Arkham City, GTA IV, Final Fantasy XIII, etc. etc. then I would be interested.

By the way, Kickstarter continues to be a really valuable tool in the video game industry. I think it is a breath of fresh air as it enables the consumer to really feel like their dollars mean something in the production of a game as opposed to meaning nothing in the traditional sense of things. No more crappy sequels to a mediocre game that had only the hype machine behind it to the point that it sells millions and then ultimately disappoints but gets a sequel anyway. Sad part is that we haven't seen any of these projects to fruition quite yet so we have to wait and see if they are worth it. I really wanted in on the Shadowrun game but missed it by a few days.

I'm kinda half and half about kickstarter. It helps people do great things, but it doesn't go without any exploitation...
anyhow, Ouya is up near 5mil, but seems to have stalled off last few days. They took a poll of sorts, what games people wanted to see on it. Skyrim and other AAA titles were on there, but I don't really see it happening? It would definitely help solidify the console for a lot of people I guess, but seeing as how they have adopted the concept of free-to-play--although it's apparently broad enough as basically as long as a game has a demo version, and pay to get more it's fine.
However, it's got an 8gb flash HD. granted has a USB port so can usb away for more space...

The studio Robert Bowling (CoD cred) they're promising a prequel to Human Element or something--can't remember title off top of my head.
Kotaku did 2 open interviews (peeps asked questions, Julie and Yves answered, respectively to their interviews). Didn't really learn anything special about the console though.
Although, Yves said Ouya atm is a little bigger than a rubiks cube o.0

Ouya's now partnered with Vevo to bring music to the console, and OnLive for streaming games. Final Fantasy 3 is being ported over (I Guess there's already an android version of it? It's a port of that). They've added a new tier on the kickstarter for this last week--it's a limited edition Ouya, brown coating and looks pretty nice actually. Also revealed a full picture of the controller last week I think. & A half-shot of the controller shipping with the limited editions here (won't let me just put the picture for some reason -.-) Really like the Ouya, nice to not see ABXY

They've got deals with two media hubs or whatever--I've never heard of either but one is XMBC or something and the other Plex, I think. Can see it in their kickstarter updates.
they have a website now too, ouya.tv although there really isn't much to it--a preorder link but none of the details so far confirmed on the kickstarter updates (unless it's in the video on there, I haven't watched it).
They're also in talks with Namco Bandai to bring some of their titles Ouya's way. & Will have support for 4 controllers
I didn't join in on the kickstarter, so am gonna just keep an eye out and see what happens. I'll catch on a bit late I guess--but I generally have money guilt out the wazoo so putting money towards it will be tough for me until they realllllly find a way to win me over

Oh man, I was bored, so I decided to go through some old topics. What a disaster the Ouya turned out to be. An underpowered Android-based system that most new phones can outperform. Very disappointing, because it was an interesting concept.

full faceplant :x
They were trying to capitalize on handheld games on the TV... then we have things like Sony coming out with Playstation TV, Playstation Now, the various forms of remote play (although that's generally big screen to smaller one) Ouya didn't have enough going for it to compete against everything here :/
Did see a story about they might be able to get elsewhere, like over in China as they've lifted their console ban now and the market's opening up there. Maybe they'll upjump the specs or something for that
least they tried I guess

I guess I could see Ouya succeeding in some nontraditional markets, like China, where traditional consoles haven't been ingrained into the culture. They would have to do some serious revamping, though, if they want it to go anywhere.
